Specialized Driving Privileges

  • Specialized Driving Privileges (SDP) allow individuals with a suspended license to drive in limited situations—such as to work, school, medical appointments, or court-ordered programs. Our monthly clinics help eligible drivers take the steps needed to regain safe and legal driving privileges.

    Through the VLP, an attorney reviews information to see if Specialized Driving Privileges (SDP) are required or if simpler legal steps are required to regain safe and legal driving privileges.

    Our program assists individuals who are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and are seeking Specialized Driving Privileges. If you qualify, here’s what to expect through our monthly clinic-based process:

    • Apply – Submit your application online or over the phone.

    • Pay $25 Fee – This helps cover the cost of materials and processing.

    • Bring Paperwork – Gather and provide any documents needed for review.

    • BMV Report Review – We obtain and review your Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) driving record.

    • Attorney Review – A volunteer attorney evaluates your case.

    • Instructional Packet – We prepare a personalized packet with step-by-step instructions for moving forward.

    • SDP (if needed) – If your case requires SDP, we connect you with another volunteer attorney for further assistance.

Next Steps:

  • Step 1: Apply online HERE or call us to complete an intake to see if you qualify.

  • Step 2: If eligible, pay the $25 fee by money order or cashier’s check and bring in your paperwork. You will receive a pick-up date for your instructional packet when all documents/payment have been received.

  • Step 3: An attorney will review your case to determine if steps can be completed to obtain a valid license. This may be SDP or simpler legal steps.

  • Step 4: You will return to the VLP office to pick up your instructional packet. If you require SDP, you will be sent to an attorney who will assist you with that process. If no SDP is required, next steps will be provided to you in your instructional packet.
