Guardianship
-
Guardianship is a legal process where a court appoints a responsible adult to make decisions for another person who cannot do so themselves. This may be:
An adult with a disability or medical condition, or
A minor whose parents are unable to care for them.
Guardianship gives the guardian legal authority to make decisions about health, safety, education, housing, and sometimes finances. Before pursuing guardianship, it’s important to explore less restrictive alternatives that may provide the support needed while still allowing the individual to maintain as much independence and decision-making power as possible.
